 Mythology of Holi And Holashtak

Holi is an very popular festival of colours and joy. It is celebrated through out the country with equal zest and zeal. This festival falls during the spring season when all the trees are filled with new flowers and new leaves, show the divine glory of God.

Holi falls on the full moon day of “phalgun maas” (Spring). This year it is on 19th March 2011. Auspicious time for burning the Holi fire will be after sunset in Godhuli Bela, as Bhadra will remain till 17:35 only. That’s why, before Holika Dahan after Bhadra time, Holi Pujan will be performed.

According to Hindu mythology Holi is connected with Bhakt Prahlad, a great devotee of lord Narayan (Vishnu). He escaped from the hands of death, while sitting in fire with his aunt Holika.
Prahlad’s father Hiranyakashyap punished him for his every moment intense devotion and chanting to lord Vishnu . But God saved Prahlad and his aunt Holika was burnt with the fire. To mark the victory of good over evil, we perform bon-fire or holika-dahan each year.

Holi is also known as the day of kam Dahan on which lord Shiva has burnt the Cupid (the lord of love) for distracting him from his meditation.

mostly Indian people play Holi with coloured water and dry colour called “Gulal”
Huge bundles of wood are gathered and burnt during night. It is a symbol of burning the impurities like our ego and hatred.
This festival is marked to spread the message of pure love and brother-hood.
